If you’re a coach or course creator and you want to grow your audience with list building Facebook ads, here are 3 things I recommend doing for high converting ads so that you don’t waste your time and money.
Hey, I’m Jenn Possick, The Ads Maven. I run ads for 6- and 7-figure coaches and course creators to help them grow their email lists and fuel their launch events. I’ve been an ads strategist for over 8 years. I know what works and what doesn’t.
Why list building Facebook ads?
List building Facebook ads are the ads that come first, before you launch. This is your opportunity to test your audiences, create warm audiences, and grow the know, like, and trust factor so that selling becomes easier. This is where I start with all of my clients. Because when you’re regularly growing your email list, your launch ads become less expensive with more sales.
Let me explain my tried and true ads strategy with a simile. (Hey, former school teacher here. I can’t help it.)
List Building Facebook Ads are like powerlifting.
I like to lift heavy things. More specifically, I really enjoy powerlifting – back squats, bench press, and deadlifts.
While I’m pretty strong and can lift heavy, if I don’t pay lots of attention to my form, I end up being really sore, and not in a good way.
Recently, by the end of my workouts, my lower back has been pretty painful.
In talking to my coaches, and having them watch my form and make suggestions, I’ve realized that with both deadlifts and back squats, I’m not tucking my hips like I should be when I stand up.
Instead, I push my butt out just a bit, which puts the weight onto my lower back, hence the pain.
Because of this, I’ve had to back off on the heavy weights to really just focus on my form, which is frustrating, but I know will be worthwhile in the long run.
It’s funny because, as I’ve been thinking about the things I need to be successful at powerlifting, there’s actually a bunch of parallels to what is needed to be run successful list building ads.
Weird, I know. But here’s just a few of them…
3 Things You Need to Run Successful List Building Facebook Ads
- Have an effective strategy.
- Be consistent.
- Have a coach who can guide you.
Let me elaborate…
1. Have an effective strategy.
Powerlifting:
At the gym, we train in chunks of 8 or 12 weeks, building up the weight each week, bit by bit, having a week to deload in the middle and give our muscles a rest so that they can then continue to get stronger the following week.
The science of it all is honestly a bit beyond me, but I know that without having these strategies, I wouldn’t know how many reps to do or what weight to lift and I wouldn’t be getting stronger.
Running Successful List Building Facebook Ads:
If you read my last blog post, you already know that growing an email list is a super effective way of growing your business, but you have to have a strategy to do it effectively.
Otherwise, you’re just giving your money away to Zuckerberg.
Would you like to know what that strategy is for running effective Facebook Ads?
It’s a little too much to share it all in this post, buuuuut I’m happy to gift it to you in my Roadmap to Profitable Facebook Ads.
2. Be consistent.
Powerlifting:
When I’ve missed a week of working out, and I come back, I feel the difference and it’s painful.
When I was busy getting everything ready for the Facebook intensive Workshop, I didn’t have time to go to the gym regularly, and when I came back, it hurt.
My muscles were so sore the next few days after my workouts that it was like I was a beginner again.
Working out works best when you’re consistent.
Running Successful List Building Facebook Ads:
Same goes for your list. You can’t expect to send one email and magically have developed the know, like, trust factor for everyone on your list and have people buying what you are offering.
Instead, by emailing regularly and giving value, you’re strengthening that relationship. You show up regularly, build the strength of your relationship and creating raving fans and clients in the process.
3. Have a coach who can guide you.
Powerlifting:
Without my coaches, I would be lost.
And I would never have gotten into powerlifting, because while I’ve enjoyed working with weights in the past and knew I was pretty strong, I didn’t know what I was doing with a barbell before joining my current gym and it’s not like the barbell area of a gym is welcoming.
I’ve been going to my gym for juuust over a year now and the first few months, it felt like I was learning a new piece of my form to fix every week.
Like I wasn’t arching my back enough for bench press, or I wasn’t placing the barbell in the proper spot on my back for back squats. And even now, I’ll sometimes find that I need to make tweaks, like really focusing on tucking my hips when I stand up from a deadlift so that my lower back doesn’t hurt.
And if I didn’t have coaches that held me accountable, honestly, I would have quit so many workouts.
Because I love powerlifting. I pretty much hate everything else.
Cardio? Pass.
Conditioning? Boo.
Oh, we’re doing like 300 jump-rope jumps and then 100 wall balls. No thank you.
But because my coach is there, and the rest of the group at the gym is there doing it with me, I keep going.
I push through.
I need my coaches.
Running Successful List Building Facebook Ads:
Now, to be completely honest, I didn’t have a coach when I first learned about growing a list. I didn’t even know that was a thing.
Instead, I invested hundreds (and quite possibly thousands) of hours into learning everything I could from everywhere I could (podcasts, blogs, webinars, courses, etc) and then hundreds more hours applying what I learned and figuring out what worked and what didn’t, and how to make things work better.
And because I was running Facebook ads for my family’s business, I also wasted a good amount of money on some ads that weren’t as effective as they could have been, simply because I didn’t know any better.
Over time I learned what I was doing, but if I’d had a coach, that learning time would have been cut into a fraction of the time and I would have saved thousands of dollars. (Sorry mom and dad.)
Now, I have coaches and mentors (and some peers) that I go to when I need some advice with my business.
